“What’s wrong with me?”
If this sounds like your inner monologue, read on.
It’s appropriate to feel tired right now. Not being able to “keep up” in a time of collective intensity is a normal response. Nothing is wrong with you.
Please let that sink in. Nothing is wrong with you.
We’re living in very intense times. We’re all experiencing varying degrees of distress as we live through a pandemic, natural disasters, horrific wars, a climate crisis, a presidential election, and so much more. These events impact us all differently due to privilege, proximity, and sensitivity, but all of us are feeling it.
Even if you aren’t consciously aware, your body is marking these collective traumas as threats. The overall tense atmosphere adds to your stress load, zapping your energy and mood.
On top of this baseline stress, you may be going through a season of transition, uncertainty, caretaking, illness, loss, or burnout. It's easy to forget how draining and straining these periods can be—especially when they are ongoing.
And for the cherry on top, you're dealing with the typical daily stressors of life—like work, traffic, money, and family obligations (to name a few).
No wonder you're so tired.
The more stressors you have, the less capacity you have.
Having less capacity isn’t a failure. It’s simply a fact. Sometimes you have the energy to stretch yourself, work on big projects, multitask, and put yourself out there. And other times, you just don’t.
You’ve been told that high energy means you’re valuable and low energy means you’re lazy. That’s codswallop! You are a natural being, and just like the natural world, you go through seasons of growth and seasons of rest.
You don’t have to hate yourself when your capacity is low. And you don't have to override your body's limits and needs in order to push through. You just need to learn to live and work with your low capacity. Supporting yourself during hard times is a skill that can be learned.
